Since its establishment in 2018, 21JPSI hosts several events each year, including a multidisciplinary “Japan Politics and Society” speaker series, academic manuscript workshops to support research by U.S.- and Japan-based social scientists, and public conferences and collaborative webinars to facilitate discussions about domestic and foreign policy challenges facing Japan and the United States.

"The U.S.-Japan Alliance as a Global Partnership"

October 8, 2024

An in-person conference (co-sponsored with Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA) held just a few days after the launch of Japan’s new Cabinet under newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. This event convened leading experts from Japan and the United States for a series of discussions on the alliance’s future and political and social challenges confronting Japan’s new leaders. "The U.S.-Japan Partnership in the 21st Century: Domestic & Foreign Policy Challenges"

February 18, 2022

21JPSI’s second national conference on U.S.-Japan relations, held online due to COVID-19. This virtual conference brought together leading scholars, think tank experts, and policymakers to discuss this crucial bilateral relationship. Following introductory remarks by the Consul-General of Japan in Chicago, it featured three panels of experts from Japan, the United States, and Europe. They explored foreign policy challenges in East Asia, Australian and European allies’ perspectives on the U.S.-Japan alliance, and domestic policy challenges facing the United States and Japan. "The U.S.-Japan Partnership in the 21st Century: Domestic & Foreign Policy Challenges"

November 8th, 2019

21JPSI’s inaugural national conference on U.S.-Japan relations. The conference—the first of its kind at Indiana University—brought together leading experts on US-Japan relations and other influential voices from Indiana to discuss the current state and desired future of this crucial bilateral relationship. Well over 100 students, faculty, staff, and members of the Bloomington and greater Indiana community gathered at the Hamilton Lugar School to hear remarks by the Consul-General of Japan in Chicago, a representative of the Indiana State government, an academic keynote, and two expert panels—on foreign policy and domestic challenges, respectively. Collaborative policy webinars

Since its establishment in 2018, 21JPSI hosts several events each year, including an interdisciplinary “Japan Politics and Society” speaker series, public conferences and collaborative webinars (see below) to facilitate discussions about domestic and foreign policy challenges facing Japan and the United States, and academic manuscript workshops to support research by U.S.- and Japan-based social scientists. Additionally, 21JPSI organizes various social engagements on campus with our speakers and among the university and local Japan-interested community.
